Lectionary: 90
Read the Gospel: Luke 7:11-17
Gospel Summary
When Jesus sees a widow whose only son has died, he is moved with compassion for her. As a widow whose only son has died, the woman is not only alone, but also facing disaster. Having lost her sources of economic support, she would be among the poorest of the poor. In this story, the widow does not speak to Jesus. Seeing her suffering and being filled with compassion for her, Jesus speaks and her son is restored to life. The crowd who witness this exclaim, “God has visited his people.”
Reflection for Families
In today’s Gospel, Jesus’s identity as the Messiah is revealed through what he does. Our identity as disciples of Jesus is revealed through what we do. Do we notice the poorest of the poor in our midst? Do we see those who are suffering? When we recognize suffering, are we, like Jesus, moved with compassion to help lessen the suffering? What are ways we can show compassion and mercy to others? Can those around us recognize God in our midst through our actions?
Bringing the Gospel into Your Family
Think about the people and situations you encounter each day as you go about your work, school, and activities. Who is suffering? Who needs to experience compassion and mercy? How can you help lessen the suffering of others? In what ways do you already help lessen the suffering of others? Think of some practical ways you can help lessen the suffering of others and reveal the presence of God in daily life.
