Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

 

Opening Prayer

Let us pray.
Dear Jesus,
thank you for sharing your good news with us.
Help us to share it with others by what we say and do.
In your name we pray.
Amen.

 

Opening Life Reflection

The topic for today’s session is spreading the good news of Jesus. Begin by writing the words “Good News” in large print on top of a chalkboard or poster. Invite the children to brainstorm what they think of as good news. Discuss:

  • Why is news about Jesus “good news?”
  • What did Jesus come into the world to do?
  • What does Jesus want his followers to do?

Allow time for discussion. We all like to hear good news and share it with others. The first followers of Jesus shared the good news about Jesus.

 

Listening to the Word of God

In the gospel reading listen to learn who spread the good news about Jesus.

Read Luke 10:1-12, 17-20.
Allow for silence.

 

 

Scripture Discussion Starters

  • Why does Jesus send out seventy of his followers in pairs of two?
  • What are they sent out to do?
  • What does Jesus tell them to do when they come into someone’s home?
  • What does Jesus tell them to do if they are not welcome in someone’s home?
  • How do they feel when they return?

 

Scripture Background

Provide 2-3 minutes of background information on the gospel.

In the gospel today Jesus sends his followers out on a mission. They are to cure the sick and spread the good news about the kingdom of God. Jesus wants his followers to help each other, so he sends them out in pairs. They are to bring peace to every home that they enter. Jesus warns his followers that in some homes they may not be welcome.

The followers of Jesus go out to spread the good news about Jesus. They cure the sick and expel demons from those who are afflicted. They return to Jesus filled with excitement and joy because they helped to build God’s kingdom on earth. Jesus tells his followers that their names are written in heaven and they will be with God forever.

  • What did Jesus want his followers to do?
  • How were they given the strength to teach and heal?
  • How can you tell others the good news about Jesus?

The Church Exists in order to Evangelize

God loves us and saves us through Jesus. Jesus Christ is the good news of God. The Church spreads the good news of Jesus throughout the world.

As followers of Jesus we are called to tell other people the good news about Jesus.

  • Where do you hear the good news about Jesus?
  • How can you spread the good news by your words and actions?
  • What are Jesus’ followers called to do?

 

The Gospel in Life

Is there someone you know who needs to hear good news? Tell them the good news about Jesus this week.
