In the name of Jesus we pray.

The topic of today’s session is sacred scripture. If you have access to a colorfully illustrated Children’s Bible, put it in the center of the room. Begin the session by brainstorming with the children what bible stories they know. List them on a large sheet of paper. Discuss:
- Which of these Bible stories is your favorite? Why?
Explain to the children that the Bible is God’s Word. When we read and listen to the Bible, God speaks to us.

- What does Jesus say to the people?
Scripture Background
Provide 2-3 minutes of background information on the gospel.
Today’s gospel begins with Luke’s introduction to the good news about Jesus. Luke is writing for people who have already heard about Jesus. He wants to help them understand the events that they have already heard about. This reading also marks the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus reads from the sacred scroll in the synagogue. The people listen to the scriptures with great reverence as Jesus stands to read from the prophet Isaiah. Jesus finds’ meaning in the scriptures for his life. We too can find meaning and direction for our lives as we listen to the scriptures.
Questions for Deeper Reflection
- When do you listen to the scriptures being read?
- What do you learn from listening to the scriptures?
- How does the Bible teach you about God’s love?
If you are not going to continue with the doctrinal discussion, proceed to the Gospel in Life.
